Hi all, joined here a while back but never put a post up yet,

Bought my 390 duke December '18 and racked up 9.5k miles so fairly enjoy the little bike regardless of it's little niggles.

Was due it's third service due to mileage and just wondering if anyone else has had theirs done?

I have been quoted £400-460 from my local dealer however 50 miles from that dealer another one has quoted me £300 or just over.

I am now at the point of just tackling the service myself (mechanic to trade) and forgetting about the last years warranty on it, as the ktm service has been rubbish.

Regards
Mike

There is nothing you cannot perform on this bike yourself with the aid of a service manual. No need to spend hard earned money for something (that you may or may not receive, and/or is properly performed) and take the chance of being disappointed when you leave. Do it yourself and be satisfied with a job well done. Warranty? LOL these are disposable motorcycles, not investment quality.

I have been looking online (youtube) and found some half decent videos of doing the valve clearance checks however only found one of them showing you the actual adjustment.

I am fine with changing shims etc if the clearance needs adjusted, however I can't really find the settings for the cam chain tensioner i.e if it needs manually adjusted or it adjusts automatically through oil pressure etc?

if anyone can shine some light, it would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

On the 1st series Dukes it is a spring operated tensioner.
You need to rotate the centre bolt a quarter turn to block the soring tension.
When done do not forget to release the spring again by turning the bolt the other way.
There are cam tensioners available for manual adjusting (not spring dependent) b.t.w.
For valve clearance please search the forum for the latest advised latest clearances directly from KTM Austria.

sorry guys maybe didn't choose best words, I have the valve clearance tolerances. I was more unsure of cam chain tensioner.

I have a 2018 duke 390 so will be the second generation.

so do you turn quarter of a turn clock wise to lock off then remove and vice versa when putting back on?

Cheers

Spring operated tensioner on the series 2 as well. Just a bit harder to remove on series 2 because it’s very close to the throttle body.
I have now run into this issue Mirius, is there an easy solution where I don't have to shift the throttle body out the way, as that looks a bit of a nightmare?
