So I've been playing with the idea of getting a 390 for a while now. I have had a lot of bikes in the past from 600's to 125cc. I found myself going back to 125's as I usually have more fun on them but I think the 390 duke will be the best of both world enough power to keep you interested and light to throw about like a 125. Is there any down side to the duke 390 as I'm thinking of buying in the next few weeks or so new model

You are correct in all respects Graham.

The downside that I can think of is that the 390 is not a great highway bike. Think long distance trips. Of course you can do it if you so desire, but there are better bikes for the task.

I consider the 390 to be one of the very best values in the motorcycle world.

I agree. The 390 is great bike for around town, but it's definitely not built for distance.

Would you say I'd be better to pay a little extra for the new model over the old. I can get a 2012 model with 12k miles for 2k or a 2017/18 model for 3k but not sure if it's worth the extra?

I didn’t know they were made in 2012. And no on the 12,000 miles.

I would buy a 2019.

Second choice, 2018

I think it would be best if you tell us what you want to do with your bike.
City traffic, highway, long trips, etc.?
I ride only in the city. I have a 150cc bike and the Duke 390 (2017).
With the 150 I am riding often full throttle. With the 390 seldom full throttle. It has a lot of power and I like it but for the city it is not really necessary.
Maybe a 250 is also an option for you. I never had one but just to mention it for the discussion.

Sorry it a 2013 model I've been offered and the bike will simply be for a bit of fun at the weekends etc with the very odd weekend trip to Scotland maybe. I'm not looking for crazy speeds as long as it can cruise at 70 on the motorway without any problems Ill be happy. I love the looks and the dash on the new model but for all I'll be usi g the bike not sure it's worth the extra money.

I dont know about older version but the new 390 is better than other 600´s!!!

It's windy on the 390 (2017) with 70mph! I had a couple of bikes in my life and I think on the Duke I feel the wind more than on any other.
There are of course windshields available but personally I think they are all ugly for the Duke.

Equivalence ? Is that a real word or did I just invent it . Think Suzuki X7 ( 250 ) Yamaha RD 125 LC / TZR 125 R ( both de restricted ) for performance levels . I have a 2018 model some performance mods and small GIVI topbox with previous model screen . Topbox knocks nearly 10 mph off max speed . In top gear 70 mph about 7000 rpm leaving 3000 rpm in reserve . Personally I avoid motorway whenever possible as too boring the 390 is built to devour twisty roads ( Penrith to Hartside summit is amazing ) . Also have a pair of Triumph Thruxtons for longer trips .
