The small adventure bike era is here. And BMW seems to be the first affordable bike out.
How about the 310GS any one? And when do KTM strike back?



I personally don't like the wheels. They look weak..

Suzuki is on

Also the Suzuki baby V-strom is coming to town. But 250ccm, is it enough torque for the mountains?

We should not forget the 400cc Royal Enfield Himalayan, already on the market for about a year. The manufacturer is said to have plans to bring the bike to the US, in conjunction with a major marketing push for its entire lineup in North America.

This emerging market niche - 400-and-under ADV/Enduro/Scrambler/Dual Sports - once again brings up the question of whether KTM/Bajaj will offer an ADV version of the Duke to challenge the 310GS of BMW/TVS (et al). This topic has come up repeatedly since the inception of the current Duke lineup in 2013, with denials and ambiguous responses from KTM. Perhaps the entry into this niche by several other manufacturers will give KTM/Bajaj an incentive to move forward.

The wheels on the BMW 310GS are interesting. They appear to be stamped steel with a sort of "hinge" in each spoke, which could permit flexing. Presumably the rims are also steel. Such an arrangement would be a bit heavy, but would be far stronger and more resilient for offroad duties than brittle alloy wheels.

Royal Enfield Himalayan

Yes, the super cool Himalayan retro style bike needs a picture. Sadly none of these Indian or Chinese bikes are available in Sweden. But I'm pretty sure if KTM makes one it will come to the north.
I once had a BMW-Rotax 650 Adventure bike and the engine I must say was Bullet Proof but the bike was too heavy to be fun in snow and dirt. A 150Kg bike is preferred for my riding skills :)

and KTM manager is still sleeping...

the suzuki is very good and it has a very reliable 2 cylinder engine that has 25hp and 2.5kg of torque. I think it can make it quite well at dirt.

Of course a 390 adventure, will be lighter, more powerfull and a true adventure bike, but KTM manager still sleeps.....

YouTube has quite a bit of info on the Chinese-made Mash Adventure 400. It comes stock with alu panniers, relatively long travel suspension, spoked wheels, a bash plate and a 19 liter fuel tank, on sale in France for about 5k Euro.

the mash adventure 400 has an old air cooled single cyllinder engine that produce 29HP and 3 kgm. I believe this is an injection version of the old srx400 engine (or a copy of it).

And what is this beautiful? Does anyone have experience with it? 151Kg dry and 30Nm

That looks like an offering from Zong Shen. I had their RX3 250cc ADV bike. Very well done bike. I heard they may be coming out with a 400. I hope this gets KTM moving. :)

A buddy of mine up in Pennsylvania has one o' them RX3 Chinese dual sport ADV bikes and has loved the heck out of it. Bought it pretty much straight out of the shipping container and assembled it in the garage at home.
As for the BMW, I have been hesitant to send too much love their way when the engine was revealed to be so underpowered compared to the other bikes in the 300-400cc category. It is a lovely bike, and I think my wife would look fantastic on one and she ain't fast anyway so it would work for her, but there isn't a comparison between bikes with such a power differential.

All that being said, I love this new trend toward small displacement bikes in general, and ADV bikes specifically. Maybe Ducati will lop a cylinder off of the new Desert Sled (instead of sleeving it down and keeping all of the weight of a v-twin, seriously WTF?) and get in this game, too.

Those are street bikes. Yeah, theysort of look like they may be able to go down a dirt road, but l wouldn't try it.

The Yamaha WR250R is a true Adventure Bike.

i believe that the 390 adventure will be at low 150 kg, with a torque orientaded 390 engine at about 40hp. In my opinion and since ktm knows how to built the greatest (true) adventure bikes its inevitable to be the greatest small adventure bike, and very capable for dirt riding. But it is very very late......
